Bone Grafting

For patients suffering from bone loss in their jaw, Dr. Schmidt says technology has advanced so much over the past decade in dentistry, that they are now able to do bone grafting right in the office. Bone grafting or bone augmentation is a procedure that uses a patient's own bone or bone like materials to build bone and add volume to the jaw. Sometimes when a patient comes to Dr. Schmidt with a missing tooth or teeth requesting implants, the jawbone surrounding those missing teeth may have atrophied or shrunk to the point that dental implants are not an option, especially if the tooth or teeth have been missing for years. Basically, there isn't enough bone necessary to support the implant and for the implant screw to safely be placed into the jaw. That's where bone grafting comes in.

Dr. Schmidt says bone can actually come from the patient's own body, or it can be processed, sterilized bone that comes from a cadaver. After the bone grafting is done, the patient has to wait several months for the grafted material to fuse with the existing bone. Dr. Schmidt says the patient's own bone actually uses the new bone as a scaffolding of sorts to recreate and rebuild the jawbone. Often times increasing the thickness of the jawbone is not only needed to provide better support for the teeth, but it also helps the patient cosmetically look more appealing. Dr. Schmidt will determine the exact type of bone augmentation needed during your consultation, depending on your specific problem, and how much bone loss there is.

Dr. Schmidt says bone grafting takes about 6 to 9 months to heal before a dental implant can be placed into the jawbone.
